The Fearless and Fabulous
Women of Brighton & Hove
This introduces us to an
extraordinary cast of women from the city's history who pushed
boundaries, who didn't take "no" for an answer and who had
incredible vision to make strides in fields as wide apart as
business, literature, medi-cine, law, entertainment, sport, art and
even military matters. These include brilliant early women doctors,
England's first female barrister, record breaking athletes and
Victorian lady entrepreneurs. Some you may have heard of, whilst
others you may wonder why you haven't.

Daniel Defoe's tour of
South East England 1724
Known as the author of
Robinson Crusoe, he was also a man of many parts. One of these was as
the author of a book which has never been out of print: "A tour
of the whole of the island of Great Britain." This talk looks at
Defoe's re-port on S.E. England in the period leading up to 1724 when
Britain was in the throes of the industrial revolution and be-coming
a world power. We travel through Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey
to see our landscape through the eyes of a master story teller and
think of what continuity and change we can discern from today's viewpoint.

Cherry will present another
selection in her series of paint-ings of Sussex scenes from both the
19th and 20th centuries. She will speak not only about the paintings
but also about the artists, some of whom are well-known, such as Eric
Ravilious, and others who are not well known at all.
